Why do some neighbourhoods concentrate situations of social disadvantage within cities? Urban vulnerability has become a key concept for analysing how processes of spatial segregation, social exclusion, and degradation of the built environment combine and materialise in the space.

This presentation addresses this phenomenon through a recent research project focused on the city of León. The study proposes an empirical analysis examining the spatial distribution of the population receiving social benefits during the period 2017–2020 in the city, combining statistical analysis with cartography produced using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The results make it possible to identify and characterise the neighbourhoods where situations of vulnerability are concentrated and to reflect on how these processes manifest themselves in medium-sized cities in the interior of Spain.
